Pushkar Camel Fair

The Pushkar Camel Fair is held every fall in the small town of Pushkar, Rajasthan.

It is one of the largest and most popular festivals in India  takes place far away from the hustle and bustle of Rajasthan cities. Thousands of camels, horses, and cattle descend on the sand dunes of Pushkar to be traded by villagers and tradesman and witnessed by worldwide travelers. This festival is as much of a business venture for farmers and ranchers, as it is a spiritual celebration of epic proportions.

If there was ever a bucket-list gathering to attend in the Eastern world, the Pushkar Fair—with its vibrant display of camel decorations and religious significance—is it.

Arrive at the Pushkar Fair

Monday, November 5, 2019

A Day at the Fair

Tuesday, November 6, 2019

After breakfast, we’ll mount up again and take a 2 -3 hour ride around the camel fair.  There will be grooms waiting to care for our horses, so we are free to explore the fairgrounds on foot.   Enjoy snacks and drinks in our group’s hospitality tent in the main arena.  In the evening, hike up Ratnagiri Hill for a spectacular sunset over Pushkar.

Leave Pushkar

Wednesday, November 7, 2019

We’ll leave Pushkar early morning (7 am) after breakfast to make the five-hour drive to Jodhpur

Savitri Temple atop Ratnagri Hill

Situated at an elevation of about 750 feet and a flight of 650 steps takes you to Savitri temple, which is the second most significant temple in the town. The best time to visit the temple is early morning as visitors would be able to witness an absolutely stunning sunrise from the top of the hill. The 1.5 km long route to the temple is hard and strenuous.

Pushkar Lake

According to mythology, all the 330 gods and goddesses of Hinduism assembled at Pushkar Lake on the day of Purnima (full moon night) to consecrate the lake. This is how the lake came to be deemed as sacred. This is the reason behind an enormous amount of pilgrims coming together at the Pushkar Lake for a holy bath to wash away their sins and pay their respects at the Brahma Mandir, the only one of its kind in India. The waters of this lake are also believed to possess healing properties. Pushkar has also been mentioned in the Mahabharata, a 2000 yrs old epic as one of the most ancient sacred sites in India. Besides this, it has also been referred to in the Hindu scriptures as one of the five holy cities.
